Using Technology To Reduce Risk

It’s a sobering statistic: In Australia, a staggering 65% of workplace fatalities
involve a vehicle. As fleets become safer, and legislation becomes more stringent, it is hoped that this figure will decline significantly.

The Workplace Health & Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) that replaced the OHS legislation in most states was implemented last year. It has significant implications for organisations that have staff operating vehicles.

There are several important changes that businesses operating a fleet of vehicles need to be aware of:

  1. The definition of a workplace has been changed to include vehicles

  2. The number of people who can be held liable in a WHS incident has been widened (it’s no longer just the Director)

  3. The penalties for a breach of the Act are now significantly more severe and include potential prison time

The implication of these changes, is that everyone within your business needs to do all they can to ensure vehicles and their drivers are safe at all times. Thanks to technology, there are tools available to help reduce risk!

The most dangerous factor in a vehicle is the driver – is he fatigued? Is he driving safely? (i.e. not speeding or driving aggressively etc.) Has he checked that the vehicle is safe and fit for purpose before setting off? In the case of an incident, do you have an emergency response procedure? How will you know there has been an incident? How will you find the vehicle?

Using simTRAC GPS Vehicle Tracking Software, businesses can now keep track of their vehicles and their mobile staff. They can ensure vehicles are being used safely, identify at risk drivers and locate a vehicle in an emergency. simTRAC is able to provide a range of options including Driver ID, In-Cab Safety Alerts, Navigation, Messaging, Duress/Panic Button, Man-Down Pendants, Driver Behaviour Reporting and various Live Alerts.

The great news is that simTRAC is not an added cost to your business, the traditional benefits such as increased productivity, reduced overheads and improved customer service ensure a significant return on investment. Contact simTRAC to discuss how we can help you reduce your risk and save you money…
